FAQ's  - Some answers to your Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I get a massage?
We all lead busy, stressful lives and massage is a wonderful way to relieve stress and tension.  Lying on a comfortable table, in a calm relaxing environment, listening to gentle music while your muscles are being softened and smoothed by an expert therapist is a perfect antidote to the high stress lives we lead. See some of the information and links to articles on massage on our
News/Benefits page.

Should I get a massage if I have backache?

Yes.  Massage can loosen up the muscles in the back and can help alleviate your backache.  Regular sessions combined with correct stretching that your therapist will show you, together with proper exercise can help to eliminate back pain altogether.  It is always a good idea to check with your physician or other health professional first.

Should I get massage if I have a muscle injury?
Yes, provided you have the approval of your physician or other health professional.  Massage therapy can help to break up the adhesions and realign tissue that causes muscle injury.

How often should I get a massage?

It really depends on what your needs are.  If you are coming for relaxation and wellness, once every 1-4 weeks is usually sufficient.  If you have a specific injury or problem, then you will need to come more often in the beginning.  Once the injury is improving, you may be able to drop back to every 2-4 weeks.  Of course, for optimum results, you should come as often as possible!

Is there any time when I shouldn't come for a massage?

You should not receive massage if you have a fever, any open wounds or an infectious disease, or are sedated or intoxicated.  Particular medical conditions will be discussed with your therapist at the first visit and massage therapy may require approval from your physician depending on your medical condition.

Do I need to get undressed?

Only to your level of comfort.  We will leave the room before you disrobe and will knock before reentering.  You will be under a sheet or blanket and the therapist will uncover only the area being worked on.  We recommend you discuss this with your therapist beforehand, since certain procedures may be more effective directly on the skin.  But, as health professionals, we know your comfort and ease is paramount to achieving the best results.  For CranioSacral Therapy, Reiki Therapy and chair massage, you will remain clothed.

How much will I pay for my massage?

The charge is $75 for an hour on the table – which means you need to allow 10-15 minutes more to discuss your session plan with your therapist. There is a $10 discount for your first visit with us. A 90 minute session is $100. See our Fees page for additional information..

How do I pay?

We accept MasterCard, Visa, cash and checks.

Do I need to tip?

Tipping is entirely optional.  If you wish to show appreciation for your therapist, you can either offer a tip in cash or add it on to your check or credit card amount. (Note: Please tell therapist amount to add to your credit card before we run it.)

What type of massage should I ask for?

It depends on your goals.  If you are looking for stress reduction, Swedish massage is your answer.  For a particular injury or problem, you may need some neuromuscular therapy and myofascial work - both deeper types of massage.  If you are an athlete, then deep tissue or sports massage with stretching and movement is the answer for you.  Frequently, the therapist will combine different types of massage to suit your personal needs.  See our Therapies page for more information.

When is the best time of day to come for a massage?

It's up to you. Some clients prefer early in the day and then they feel wonderful for the rest of the day.  Other clients prefer to come at the end of the day to relax and improve their sleep patterns.  You can come either before or after exercising.  If after exercising, we suggest a cool down period and a shower for cleanliness.

Can I come for a massage with a friend or my partner?

Yes, we even offer a special rate for a "couples massage."  You can either have your session in our double room (Sedona) or in individual rooms.

How far in advance should I make an appointment?

We rarely have availability for walk-ins, so we strongly suggest you call first.  We will do our best to accomodate your schedule.  If we don't answer the phone, we may be with another client but we will call back promptly.  Please leave a message with a preferred time and date and your telephone number.  Our number is (908) 359-5777.

What if I cannot make a scheduled appointment?

Please call as soon as you know you are unable to come in.  Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice are subject to a billing fee.  But please call us!

Can I learn to give my friend or partner a massage?

Yes, we offer small classes where you can learn to give each other a simple massage for relaxation. You can choose to come to the hand and foot massage session or a neck and shoulder session. When it's cold outside, we offer the opportunity to learn to do a hot foot bath, a wonderfully soothing winter treatment.  For details, dates and registration, see our Workshops page.

Can I learn more about how to keep my body healthy?

Yes, we offer stretching and strengthening classes in small groups for clients who wish to maintain healthy posture and prevent injury when exercising.  Depending on the season, we offer classes for the ski slopes or the golf links.  For details, dates and registration, see our Workshops page.

What training and experience do you have?

Each of us has received certification from the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork.  Each of us is New Jersey State Certified, and as soon as the 2008 Massage Licensing statute becomes effective, we will become New Jersey Licensed Massage Therapists.   We all have advanced training and experience as shown on our About Us page.  Additionally, we are all members of the American Massage Therapy Association, the nation's largest and oldest professional association for massage and bodywork professionals.  Finally, we are each owner-operators (partners) of Hillsborough Massage Therapy LLC and cater to providing you with, "The Very Best in Massage."
